A walk of ease, a heart with peace.
Tudong, the Dhamma Road
Tudong (from the Thai word Thudong, derived from the Pāli dhutaṅga) refers to the austere practices undertaken by Buddhist monks who travel on foot, living simply and mindfully. It is both a physical and spiritual journey—one that embodies renunciation, discipline, and trust in the path.
Dhammayatra, meaning “pilgrimage of Dhamma,” is a peaceful walking practice rooted in this tradition. It offers monks and lay practitioners an opportunity to cultivate mindfulness, patience, and inner stillness while moving through the world in harmony.
The purpose of the Dhammayatra is to:
- Develop spiritual growth through simplicity and letting go
- Raise awareness of peace and Dhamma in the community
- Deepen mindfulness through silent, step-by-step walking meditation
- Live in dependence on the generosity of others (pindapata)
The walking is done silently, at a steady, mindful pace—one step, one breath at a time. The simplicity of this practice fosters deeper reflection, humility, and connection with nature and all beings.
